Vozme : Adding Speech to your website – Convert Text to Audio

VozMe is a free internet based web application providing text to speech conversion facility. It converts Text to MP3 Audio format and plays it back automatically. VozMe provides WordPress and blogger plugins which can be used by the webmasters to offer text to speech in the website. Once the plugin is installed and enabled, it inserts a ”Hear Post ” link in the post or web page. Upon clicking this link, VozMe converts and reads out the text. It supports both male and female voices.
Another interesting feature is the support for multiple languages. It can covert the text written in English, Hindi, Español, Italiano , Português and català to the native language voice equivalents. This is a very useful feature.
Installing VozMe in WordPress
- Download vozme.zip (version 1,5, March 3, 2008) or vozme.tar.gz (version 1,5, March 3, 2008).
- Extract the compressed file. You’ll get a folder named vozme.
- Upload the folder vozme to /wp-content/plugins/.
- Get into WordPress administration tool > Plugins and click the “Activate” link within the vozMe plugin.
- Access “Options > vozMe” and select your favorite options

Java Script Based Integration
Vozme supports java script based integration too. You can just copy the script provided in the integration page http://vozme.com/webmasters.php?lang=en and embed that in your web page / post. This scripts displays an image and the link “Hear this Post”. This is a quick method of integration.
- JavaScript integration
It also supports browser integration via bookmarklets. Install the bookmarklet and select any text as you browse, click the vozMe button in your browser and you will hear the text. This is a nice feature.
The voice quality is not that great and the choice of voice is limited to just a male and female. This a feature that needs improvement. Considering that all these features are available for free, this is a great tool.
