How to add text watermark over a photo for free using Splashup

You have shot an amazing photo and you want to put that in your website. But you are afraid someone will copy the photo and use it for their own purposes. This is a common problem faced by many people. The best way to protect the photos / images you shot is to copyright it. You can add a watermark over the photo with your name or the name of your organization or website to announce to the world that this is your property.

What is the best possible way to add a water mark

The best way to do this is to use the free online image editor Splashup. Splashup is free and is available over the internet.  Let us see how we can quickly carry out the task using Splashup.

Here is a quick outline of the steps.

  1. Open the Image in Splashup
  2. Choose the proper font and color for the watermark text matching the image
  3. Using the Layers tool cut the opacity of the text to around 40%
  4. Use the layer effect tool to add Bevel effect to the text layer
  5. Save the image.

Step 1 : Open the Image

Load Splashup using the link  Launch Splashup. Once the Splashup editor is loaded,  use File -> “Open Image” and choose the image you want to edit from your Desktop, Facebook, Picasa or Flickr.

Step 2: Choosing the appropriate Text Attributes

Once the image is loaded into splashup (Step 1),  Select the Text Tool ( A ) from the tools menu and change the font style and size to your choice and change the font color matching the image. Typical font colors used for watermark text are grey, black or white. There is no hard rule, use the color best matching the image.

With the Text Select Tool selected, click anywhere on the image and type in the water mark text. For instance, (c ) your website name.

Step 3: Reduce the Opacity

Select the Layer with the icon ( A ) and cut the opacity of the layer to around 40%.  You can use the move tool from the tools menu to move the text anywhere on the image.

Step 4: Add Bevel Effect to the Text

With the Text layer selected ( Layer with icon A ), select the layer effects from the (Layer -> Layer effects )menu ( Top menu bar) . This will open up the Layer effects pop up window. Select  Bevel from the Drop Down and click the Add button. Once Bevel effectl is added you can see various attributes of it in the right side of the pop up window. Select the Type as full and deselect the Knock out check box. Rest of the values can be kept as is.

Step 5: Save Image

Use File – > Save Image to save the image in any format you like. For web, it is better to save in jpg format ( How to Reduce Image size for online).
